COURSE GOALS
To provide participants with the necessary know-how regarding shaft alignment issues in large cargo vessels.
At the end of the course, the participants are expected to be able to: (a) understand the operating principle of
journal bearings, (b) understand the procedures of calculating and applying an efficient shaft alignment plan to
vessels, (c) understand current Class regulations and in-situ practices regarding shaft alignment, (d) perform
simple calculations of shaft alignment and bearing performance.
CONTENT SUMMARY
I. Theory
a. Introduction. Marine shafting systems. Main Engines. Gearboxes. The problem of shaft alignment in ships.
Techno-economical aspects.
b. Journal bearing operation. Basics of hydrodynamic lubrication. Basic calculations.
c. Generation of a safe/efficient shaft alignment plan.
d. Application of shaft alignment plan – Jack-up tests during sea trials. Do’s and Don’ts.
e. Effects of hull deformations, bearing foundation stiffness and oil film thickness on the shaft alignment
characteristics.
f. Modelling of shafting systems.
II. Practice
a. Modelling of shafting systems using computer software. Selection of proper shaft alignment plan for a
typical cargo vessel.
b. Calculation of bearing performance characteristics.
