Crude oil composition. Refinery processes. Distillate and residual marine fuels. Composition of marine Heavy
Fuel Oil (HFO). Biofuels.
Thermophysical properties of marine fuels. Contaminants – catalyst fines. Requirements for distillate and
residual marine fuel properties – ISO 8217. Fuel stability and compatibility – sludge formation.
Fuel sampling and analysis. Characterization of fuel quality – standard measurements. Additional tests. Onboard
fuel storage and handling: fuel tanks, centrifuge, pumps and filters. Fuel heating.
Essentials of marine Diesel engines and boilers. Problems associated with marine fuel quality and contaminants –
catalyst fines. Examples of marine propulsion system accidents.
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Essentials of dual fuel marine engines. Examples,
exercises.
