Superintendents play a critical role in ship management. Ships are increasingly sophisticated assets and their operation is a complex business.
To secure safe and efficient operations and achieve economic success, shipping companies rely on superintendents. A superintendent’s ability to identify hazards, analyze risks, identify and evaluate options and take action, determines the flow of the shipping process.
The course touches on all the main topics where the superintendent needs to be in control, from classification and statutory matters, to hull and machinery, and not forgetting the all-important management systems.
Emphasis will be given on:
- Class concept and Class systematics
- Class Fleet in Service rules
- Machinery surveys systematics and machinery survey arrangements
- Machinery damage and postponements
- Hull strength and simple beam theory
- Hull inspections and Hull damage
- Statutory regulations,
- MARPOL & Environment (overview and latest developments)
- SOLAS (overview and latest developments)
- Overview of management systems in shipping. Quality assurance and auditing practices
- Port State Control (overview and latest developments)
Objectives: The objectives of the course were to provide the participants with the knowledge and understanding necessary to fulfill the role of a superintendent within the organization of a shipping company. Statutory regulations and Class systematics were also explained, including relevant statutory and classification requirements, and a practical approach to structural problems and machinery survey schemes.
Entry Requirements: Experience in shipping and familiarity with maritime regulations prior to the course as many issues must be seen as clarifications and updates
Who should attend: Personnel involved in ship management, and in particular ship owners’ superintendents
